Giorgio Moroder Presents Metropolis: Special Edition
Imagen Imagen
In 1981, 3-time Academy Award Winning composer Giorgio Moroder began a three-year endeavor to restore the science fiction classic, Metropolis. During this restoration Moroder made the controversial decision to give a film a new, contemporary score and added a pop music soundtrack featuring songs from some biggest pop and rock stars of the early MTV era including Pat Benatar, Billy Squier, Freddie Mercury, Bonnie Tyler, Adam Ant, Jon Anderson and more! In addition, to the new score, missing footage was re-edited into the film, intertitles were removed and replaced with subtitles and sound effects and color was added, creating an all new experience... and an all new film. For more than a quarter century, this version of the film has remained out of print, until now. A new HD transfer was created from one of the few remaining prints available and Kino Lorber is presenting the film in the best possible quality, as it was seen in its original release in August 1984.

Studio: Kino Video | Release Date: 11/15/2011 | Length: 82 mins

Ah, la de 1987 por lo que veo es la restauración que hizo Enno Patalas, que provee un audicomentario en varias ediciones que hay en DVD pero que según DVDCompare.net traen la restauración del 2001 (2002 Murnau Foundation 75th aniversary restored version, with German intertitles) salvo una edición australiana que trae (Unidentified version - said to have a longer running time due to the use of the "original" 20fps frame rate (~139min PAL) que coincide con la versión de 1987 a 20 FPS y una edición francesa que se puede ver comparada con la de KINO del 2003 aquí: Transit-Universum Film PAL Region 2 vs. Film sans Frontières PAL Region 2

Runtime: (DURACIONES)
The actual presentation in 1927 might have been at 25 frames per second (fps) (according to film restorer & historian Enno Patalas, the animation in Metropolis was shot at 25 fps and the score by Huppertz was composed for that speed) or even 28 fps (according to restorer Martin Koerber) depending on the source you are asking. Ironically, it was Koerber who suggested that 20 fps was the correct speed for the film, whereas the Murnau Foundation suggests 22 fps...
• Original Length: 9 reels, 4189 m = 183:44 min (20 frames per second/fps); 167:02 min (22 fps); 153:06 min (24 fps); 146:59 min (25 fps)
• 1927 cut version: 3241 m = 142:09 min (20 fps); 129:14 min (22 fps); 118:27 min (24 fps); 113:43 min (25 fps)
• 1987 restored version: 3150 m = 138:09 min (20 fps) [DVD AUSTRALIANO]; 125:36 min (22 fps); 110:32 min (24 fps); 110:32 min (25 fps)
• 2001 restored version: 7 reels, 3370,5 m = 147:50 min (20 fps); 134:23 min (22 fps); 123:11 min (24 fps); 118:16 min (25 fps) [CASI TODOS LOS DVDs DEL 2002 AL 2009]
Notes: (NOTAS)
• Metropolis originally had a total length of 4189 meters, which corresponded to a total running time of 204 minutes (at 18 frames/second — 183 minutes if played at 20 frames/second), which was an outrageously long film by the standards of the day. Over his objections, Lang's film was shortened by the distributer, UFA, to 63 minutes for its American release. No original prints of the complete film exist, although there are several restored versions.
• In 1928, a year after its initial release and shortening, Lang put together a longer re-edit of the film, known as the '28 German version.
• Another restored but shorter (87 minutes) version was re-released in 1984, featuring a soundtrack produced by Giorgio Moroder. This version is also color tinted, supposedly according to Fritz Lang's original vision (at least according to Moroder).
• There was also a version put together by the East German Government around 1969, which is still seen on television in Germany and some of the other EU countries, which purports to have several of the "missing" scenes from the original film restored. This version runs 115 minutes when seen on TV (at 20 frames/ second).
• The 1986/87 version prepared by the Filmmuseum Munich, restored by Enno Patalas according the original script, has the lost scenes replaced either with stills or titles, and has a total length of 3150 meters, or 138 minutes at 20 frames/ second.
• "Between Dec. 2000 and Feb. 2001, Alpha-Omega digitally restored the famous 1927 silent film classic Metropolis on the behalf of rights-owner Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung, and the German federal filmarchive, Bundesarchiv Filmarchiv. Using state-of-the-art technology, countless fragments of original film, including most of the original camera negative, have been scanned at 2K film resolution and digitally restored by Alpha-Omega. The final data was printed back to 35mm by Centrimage, Laboratoire Neyrac Films, Paris. The result was first screened in 35mm at the 2001 Berlin Film Festival. Metropolis became the first full-length feature film in Europe to be restored using high-resolution digital restoration. But the task was far more difficult than a simple digital process: because the film no longer existed in its original premiere cut, it had to be reconstructed and scanned from separate surviving fragments of different Metropolis film prints collected from film archives all over the world. ... The final digital work for reel seven of Metropolis was completed by the end of March, 2001. With that, one of the most important film classics in history was restored in a form more faithful to the original script, and with a superior visual presentation unmatched since its original Berlin premiere on January 10, 1927."

DVDBEAVER.COM: Eureka (Masters of Cinema # 8 - 2 disc) - Region 2 - PAL vs. Kino International - Region 1 - NTSC vs. Kino - Region FREE - Blu-ray vs. Masters of Cinema - Region 'B' - Blu-ray
ADDITION: Masters of Cinema - Region 'B' Blu-ray - (November 2010) - The Masters of Cinema Metropolis Blu-ray comes in two flavors; Both are 'reconstructed and restored' and both, presumably, the exact same 1080P transfer. One, however is a standard (with lone Blu-ray disc noted by the Blue-sticker) and the other is housed in a 'steelbook' case (noted by a green-sticker) and has the 2-disc DVD set (noted by a red-sticker) - available HERE - also included... and so labeled a "dual-format' package.
The visual differences between the US and UK Blu-rays is too minute to make issue with. I had my wife do a double-blind test, using my 60" system, on 3 separate scenes and I wasn't able to state with any certainty which edition one was playing. Technically we can give this to the Masters of Cinema transfer though which has a higher overall disc space size, larger file size for the 2.5 hour feature - by about 2.5 Gig - and hence, a higher video bitrate. Perhaps someone with a sharper eye or larger system could note any disparity.
NOTE: If you are keen enough to find a difference in the screen captures below - be aware that it is possible that I didn't match the exact frame and, more importantly, that in-motion these minor differences can be virtually imperceptible. Both are from the same source and both 1080 progressive.
Audio is likewise indistinguishable - both with two lossless DTS-Master tracks (5.1 and 2.0 channel) of the Gottfried- Huppertz score as performed by the Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra, Berlin - conducted by Frank Strobel. It sounds so majestic and rich - really magnificently supporting the onscreen visuals.
So, what are the differences? - well, like the DVD editions, Masters of Cinema have recreated the theatrical 'feeling' using the original German intertitles cards - with English subtitle translation optional. I rate this as a huge difference almost akin to a DUB vs. original language audio. Personally, I am put far deeper into the mood and aware of the historical significance of what I am watching. Also the Masters of Cinema subtitle translation is more complete and accurately worded (see our sample below). My Momitsu confirms that the UK disc is region 'B'-locked.
The other ginormous difference is in the extras. The MoC matches the Kino with the never-before-seen 54-minute documentary on the making and restoration of Metropolis entitled The Voyage to Metropolis (Die Reise nach Metropolis) and the 2010 restoration trailer. What we lose is the 10-minute interview with Paula Felix-Didier, curator of the Museo del Cine, in Buenos Aires. BUT what we gain is fabulous - a full-length audio commentary, recorded in March of 2010, by David Kalat (who, generally, handles production history) and Jonathan Rosenbaum (discussing critical perspectives - also impressions from other journalists). They work very well together and discuss the enduring legacy of Lang's Sci-fi classic, revelations contained in the newly found footage, the power of the images and film language utilized by the iconic director among many other details. It's fabulous - fairly low key - but brimming with relevant information. Possibly this is my favorite commentary of the 2010 year. Lastly, included in the package is a magnificent 56-page booklet featuring archival interviews with Fritz Lang, a 1927 review by Luis Buñuel, articles by Jonathan Rosenbaum and Karen Naundorf, and restoration notes by Martin Koerber. Masters of Cinema handily wins in the supplements department.
